Downey Drawing was inspired by an encounter with a Downy Woodpecker on an afternoon walk. I loved the pose so much I ended up doing a full colour piece after I completed this pencil drawing. The full colour piece 'Snow Gazer' is also a tutorial here in the art academy.

In part one we begin our drawing by applying values to establish the basic shape and form of the Downy.
With our values set we now start applying detail to the head and back of our Downy woodpecker.
In part three we detail the wing feathers, breast and start to texturize the branch in our drawing.
In this final part we apply final detail to the bird and branch and then use shading to soften off the drawing where needed.
