So many of my paintings are subject matter that I experience in and round my home. I am very lucky to live in a very rural area that has hundreds of trails in the vicinity, trails I walk everyday with my dog Tuk. This particular painting was inspired by a set of fox tracks that crossed our path and ventured off into the woods. I loved the pattern that the snow covered branches made and instantly thought that the speckling of red/orange leaves would make a nice unity element if I painted a fox into the scene. Once back in the studio I started to add in different fox photos I had, but nothing seemed to work. In the end I combined the best elements of two different fox pictures to create one perfect fox for the setting. Using the body from one reference and the head from another reference and 'finessing' them together into the fox you see in Emerging Colour.
In this art lesson we learn how to paint soft fluffy snow. Using subtle colour and value changes we will learn how to create shape and form in snow and give it realism and body. We will also learn how to break down complex textures or patterns like the entangled forest behind the fox. We will also learn how to tie in our elements using principles and elements to create a strong, well balanced composition.

In this part we learn how to take the complex shapes of the background and break them down into manageable areas.
-
Emerging Colour Pt.8
In this part we finish off the right side of the background and then move our attention to the blocking in of the left side.
-
Emerging Colour Pt.9
In this part we start to break up the left side of the background and create the shapes and forms with detail.
-
Emerging Colour Pt.10
With the top of the painting completed we move our attention to the snow covered branches of the right side foreground.
-
Emerging Colour Pt.11
In this part of the tutorial we start to build up the shape and form of the snow down the left side of the painting.

-
Emerging Colour Pt.14
In this part of the tutorial we add lots of detail to the snow and refine the shape and form of the limbs along the right of the board.
-
Emerging Colour Pt.15
In this part we start to add final detail creating hyper realism. We add extras like little sticks emerging from the snow etc.
